Everybody loves sandwiches, and they have been a staple of our diets almost forever. Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook: All the Best (and Most Surprising) Things People Have Put Between Slices of Bread, by Barry W. Enderwick, is a fun book that educates us on the origin of sandwiches, as well as sandwiches eaten throughout history.
This book is fascinating and very humorous. The author is relatable and is definitely someone you’d like to eat a sandwich with. Of course the early chapters cover things like different breads, toppings, and fillings, as a definition of a sandwich. Enderwick includes recipes for sandwiches in history and their year of origin. Luckily sandwiches have gotten better (although some classics are timeless) as time has evolved, and there are mouthwatering modern sandwiches that most of us will want to make at home. There are sandwich recipes gathered from around the world, and club sandwiches, vegetarian sandwiches, tea sandwiches, and sweet sandwiches to choose from, and some with very surprising fillings, but I was a bit disappointed that there isn’t a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and its origins.
The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions. He also adds tips and suggestions for improving on some of the basic sandwiches. There are also beautiful, professional photographs of the finished sandwiches – Yum!
This is a fun cookbook and recommended for sandwich lovers.
