Ten Activities at Bok Tower Gardens in February
Although any time is good for a visit to Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, February 2019 promises to be extra-special. The month kicks off with the 90th Anniversary Founder's Day Celebration. Here are 10 activities scheduled throughout the month that should appeal to just about everyone, young or old:

  1. What: 90th Anniversary Founder's Day Weekend Celebration
    When: February 1-3 from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M.
    Details: The historic iron Yellin gates are opened so visitors can cross the moat and take a guided tour of the carillon tower. This is included with general admission or membership.

  2. What: Spring Bloom Festival walking tours
    When: Monday-Saturday at 12 and 2 P.M.; Sunday at 2 P.M.
    Details: Tours start outside the Visitor Center. They are included with general admission or membership.

  3. What: Harmony Dark Sky Star Party
    When: Saturday, 2 February from 3 to 10 P.M.
    Details: In addition to scheduled programs, there will be Up-Close Encounters with Nocturnal Animals and an astronomy-inspired carillon concert. All events are included with general admission or membership.

    • Dr. Story Musgrave, Adventures with Light – 4 P.M.
    • Francine Prager, Bats of the World – 5 P.M.
    • Dr. Daniel Batcheldor, From Rock to Rock: Human Space Exploration Beyond the Moon and Mars – 5:30 P.M.
    • Dr. Brooke Wheeler, Martian Agriculture: Envisioning How to Support Space Exploration – 6:30 P.M.
    • Dr. Stephen Eikenberry, Black Holes – 7 P.M.
    • Derek Demeter, Dark Horizons: Exploring Florida’s Dark Skies – 8 P.M.
    • Dr. Kevin Mackay, From Maeshowe to Machu Picchu: Human Links to Astronomy throughout History – 8:30 P.M.


  4. What: Spring Bloom Festival: Music on the Terrace with Brian Sutherland
    When: Sunday, 10 February from 12 to 2 P.M.
    Details: Enjoy lunch from the Blue Palmetto Café while listening to the music of Brian Sutherland, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. This program is included with general admission or membership.

  5. What: Your Central Florida Lawn
    When: Wednesday, 13 February from 12 to 1 P.M.
    Details: Learn how to select the right turf grass for your home. Lawn experts from UF IFAS (University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences) will cover lawn selection and maintenance. This program is included with general admission or membership.

  6. What: Valentine’s Day: For the Love of Chocolate
    When: Thursday, 14 February at 1-2 P.M. & 5:30-6:30 P.M.
    Details: Learn how to make a simple dark chocolate syrup and add flavors like brandy and herbs. Cost: $10 for members, $17 for non-members

  7. What: Bok After Dark: Valentine’s Day
    When: Thursday, 14 February from 5 to 8:30 P.M.
    Details: Enjoy listening to New Orleans Nighthawks Jazz Band on the terrace, followed by a carillon concert. Dinner and shopping specials are included with general admission or membership.

  8. What: Time for a Change Meditation Retreat
    When: Saturday, 16 February from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M.
    Details: Join Reiki Master and Sound Healer Kristen Tenpenny for a retreat devoted to understanding energy medicine postures, breathing exercises, guided visualization meditation, walking meditation, and sound healing. Cost: $40 for members, $47 for non-members.

  9. What: Children’s Meditation & Yoga Retreat
    When: Sunday, 17 February from 10:30 A.M. to 12 P.M.
    Details: Kristen Tenpenny will show kids, ages 8 to 12, how meditation can be fun and easy. They will learn tastes, sounds, smells, yoga stretching postures, breathing exercises, guided visualization, and experience sound healing. Cost: $20 for members, $27 for non-members.

  10. What: President’s Day Carillon Concert
    When: Tuesday, 19 February at 1 & 3 P.M.
    Details: Hear a special concert of carillon music featuring patriotic songs. This event is included with general admission or membership.
